The Legend of Avelino Martinez

The Legend of Avelino Martinez

Sure, it's great to see a Chinese American superhero on the big screen, but I want to see a movie about Avelino Martinez.

I finally found his mural (one of a series of Tehachapi historical murals) on the streets of Tehachapi on my most recent otherwise tedious drive between Las Vegas and the Bay Area. This Chinese Mexican Native American cowboy lived to 112 despite running with a gang of horse rustlers and spent his golden years as a ranch cook, riding into town to visit friends and tell his tales.

Next time through, I'm going to look for his grave, dug incorrectly, more legend has it, by a couple of drunks paid by his ranch boss.
