Blue Mars

I've had some good contract projects, but if I had to pick a favorite, it'd probably be Blue Mars.

The development took place during a virtual world craze in the late 2000s, when everyone, including the Second Life people, wanted to make the next Second Life.

In fact, I even interviewed with another virtual world startup called There, but there was no there there (I'm just kidding, it actually looked like a sharp group of people, including someone I'd worked with before on the original HyperBowl, but I couldn't take all the quizzing during the interview, got fed up after the fourth "I want to see you think" test).

But this is why I like contract work– for Blue Mars, I skipped all that folderol, just worked on it part-time, billing hourly, on projects as they needed, and that lasted four years, until the virtual world craze dissipated and they had to wind down. Too bad, I think it would have been great to have around during the pandemic.
